“Me siento parte de una comunidad, la del euskera.Si el euskera está fuerte, la bertsolaritza también. Y ahora también es el momento de las mujeres en la bertsolaritza” (Ainhoa).
“Es una forma de vivir y entender la vida, de ver el mundo y abrir tu mente. Los domingos en la mesa hacíamos bertsos y veía unos dibujos Lazkao Txiki y ahí me enganchó. El euskera es parte de nuestra personalidad. Una forma de expresar emociones, pensamiento, reivindicaciones o preocupaciones” (Julio).

Es el arte de cantar en verso de manera improvisada para conversar o pronunciar un discurso, rimando y con una métrica establecida. La palabra bertso en euskera equivale a lo que en castellano es una estrofa escrita según una métrica.
Es muy anterior a cualquier manifestación escrita del euskera, literatura oral espontánea.
El objetivo no es improvisar textos de gran calidad literaria sino emocionar al público. Las y los bertsolaris, por tanto, son gestores de emociones.
Los bertsolaris aúnan poesía, chanza y actualidad. Los bertsolaris se provocan mutuamente y apoyados en una melodía concreta, atendiendo al tema propuesto por el gai jartzaile -persona que guía el evento y propone los temas-.
“Komunitate baten parte sentitzen naiz, euskararena. Euskara indartsu badago, bertsolaritza ere bai. Eta, gainera, orain emakumeen garaia da bertsolaritzan”(Ainhoa).
“Bizitzeko eta bizitza ulertzeko, mundua ikusteko eta zure burua irekitzeko modu bat da. Igandero bertsotan aritzen ginen mahaiaren inguruan eta Lazkao Txikiren marrazkiak ikusten nituen, hor harrapatu ninduen. Euskara gure nortasunaren parte da; emozioak, pentsamoldea, aldarrikapenak eta kezkak adierazteko modu bat” (Aritz).

Bat-bateko jardun batean bertsotan abestuz elkarrizketa bat mantendu edo hitzaldi bat eman eta beti finkatutako errima eta metrika mantentzen dituen artea da.
Euskararen edozein adierazpen idatzi baino askoz lehenagokoa da, bat-bateko ahozko literatura.
Helburua ez da kalitate literario handiko testuak inprobisatzea, baizik eta entzuleak emozionatzea. Hortaz, bertsolariak emozio-kudeatzaileak dira.
Bertsolariek poesia, txantxak eta gaurkotasuna uztartzen dituzte. Bertsolariek elkar zirikatzen dute, beti ere melodia jakin batez lagunduta eta gai jartzaileak (gaiak proposatu eta saioa gidatzen duen pertsona) proposatutako gaiari erantzunez.

It is the art of improvising songs in verse to talk or give a speech, with a rhyme and an established metre. The Basque word bertso is equivalent to the English verse – writing arranged with a metrical rhythm.
It far predates any Basque written manifestation since it comes from impromptu oral literature.
The goal is not improvising high literary quality texts but moving the public. Bertsolaris, therefore, are managers of emotions.
Bertsolaris blend poetry, jokes and news. They taunt each other following a certain melody and the topic suggested by the gai jartzaile (the event’s host who suggests the topics).
